Understanding Makes the Difference

One thing I love about mathematics is that it is a subject that learners can solve given problems following explained examples. When a learner grasps the logic or steps to solve a mathematical problem, it is easier to conquer any other related problem. Following this approach, I understood how to solve several mathematical problems and became the best mathematics student during my senior secondary school days. It was a different story during my 300 level in the university as I failed and rewrote ordinary differential equations (ODE), one of the courses many students of the then Mathematics and Computer Science Department dreaded. At first, just as many other students who dread mathematics generally, I lacked understanding of how to solve ODE problems which brought fear and failure.

This is applicable to the issues of life. Many businesses have closed down because the proprietors lacked understanding of basic business management principles. Many relationships are in shambles as those involved lack understanding of how to build and maintain strategic relationships. Therefore, lack of understanding leads to fear, failure and death. Little wonder, the Psalmist asked God to give him understanding so that he can live (See Psalm 119:144). It is important that our minds grasp how to handle the issues of life following God’s principles and methods. When you lack understanding, you cannot be outstanding. The Bible admonishes us to get understanding (See Proverbs 4:7). So, how can we get understanding?

We can ask our Maker – God, to endue us with the Spirit of understanding (Isaiah 11:2) in any area of our lives. God’s Spirit has unlimited abilities and can handle any spiritual and human related problems. This dimension of God’s Spirit has given life to many individuals, relationships, businesses, to name but a few.

Another way God gives understanding on how to live and handle life’s problems is His Word (principles, patterns, methods) – The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple (Psalm 119:130). The simple are those who believe God’s Word and are hungry for understanding while willing to learn and take responsibility. With this understanding they can bear fruits that bring amazing and live transforming benefits to them and others.

“But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:23)

It is very important that we cherish God’s Word and let it dwell in us richly by constantly hearing, reading, studying, mediating and applying it. Remember, your level productivity and success in life is determined by how much you understand God’s principles, patterns and methods (Joshua 1:8).

You cannot receive the Spirit of understanding if you are yet to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Say this prayer of salvation: Lord Jesus, I accept that I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Come into my heart. I receive You as my Lord and Savior and I receive Your eternal life. I believe that You came, died for me and rose again to save me. Conform me to Your likeness. I declare that I am born again. Amen!
