Spiritual Purging

“So, whoever cleanses himself [from what is ignoble and unclean, who separates himself from contact with contaminating and corrupting influences] will [then himself] be a vessel set apart and useful for honorable and noble purposes, consecrated and profitable to the Master, fit and ready for any good work.” (2nd Timothy 2:21)

In his letter to his spiritual son, Timothy, the Apostle Paul stressed the need for every one who relates or partners with God to be purged. This implies that every child of God has a responsibility to conduct spiritual purging to be useable. Just like we take a laxative when we have any discomforting experience in our bowels, we need to constantly purge ourselves of every thought or habit that stands between us and our walk with God.

In His bid to save the world, God looks for human vessels or instruments who are fit for use. Therefore, his children have a role to play in attaining and maintaining this fitness. In a world where immorality and all manner of ill vices are viewed as normal every Christian believer must be sensitive to spiritual well-being. The same way God charged the children of Israel to be holy, He has not stopped instructing His children to be holy as He is: “And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.” (Leviticus 20:26 – KJV)

We need to be intentional about our spiritual purging. Our ability to overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is extremely crucial. Many destinies in Christ have been cut short because of corrupting influences. What we feed our eyes and minds with daily contributes to our spiritual, mental and physical well-being or contamination. It is our onus to identify and get along with the right associations – relationships that will make us honorable in that sight of God.

One crucial habit that helps every believer in spiritual purging is constant meditation on God’s Word – His method, principles, instructions, rules, regulations and commands: “And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.” (1st Corinthians 3:18 – AMPC). By so doing, the Spirit of God helps the believer to shed every ignoble character and consecrated to the Master (God), fit and ready for any good work.

If you are yet to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, you do not belong to God’s family and God cannot use you for His purposes. You can belong to God’s family by accepting Jesus Christ into your heart. Say this prayer of salvation: Dear Lord Jesus, from today, I accept and confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I believe that you died and rose again to save me. Wash my sins away and shape my character. I declare that I am born again.  Amen!
